Life Is Beautiful is a play/film about the life of an Italian family whose lives are turned upside down due to Nazi uprise as the family is taken to concentration camps. Throughout the story the main character Guido finds a way to reassure and comfort his son, through humour — eventually giving up his life for his son’s freedom.
The design for this poster reflects a theme of hope and freedom through light coming in through a door into a room — like those prisoners would live in. Moreover, the title typography makes a reference to the concentration camp striped uniforms. The stripes on the stream of light serve both to emphasize the sense of light and shadow created by the title; but also the light portrays the way Guido’s sacrifice created a path for his son to walk free.
